# \[beginner\] How to create actor filter

Hello,

I have a question which should be relatively simple, but for two days now I can not figure out how to fix this. I have a username in a text variable (java.lang.String I think) called selecteduser. So this variable contains a username, for example walter.bates.

How do I create an actor filter, which sets the actor to the value of the variable? I ran the wizards more than 10 times with the documentation before me, but its jibberish, it does not make any sense. Eventually I end up with some java code, but no idea what to code or to do.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,  
  
 I think that what you is to use Actor Filtering but not create a new kind of it.  
 See&nbsp;http://documentation.bonitasoft.com/actor-filtering  
  
 Use "Single user" filter and take care to file the variable with the User ID (and not name).

The thing is that I have the username stored already. I think its going to take more time to store the User ID, than to create a new actor filter.
